Hey! I am a young guy in 20s and it’s been unclear in my direction to SWE. I would love to know your insight/thoughts! Background: - B.S in ME - 2 years of experience as QA Engineer at a small web/app software company. (still employed, remote) - Been teaching myself code in front-end HTML CSS Javascript and back-end (Node.JS). - Deployed 3 front end projects using React and one full stack netflix clone. - Still learning everyday 2-3hrs 1. Back-end framework in javascript 2. Leetcode 3. EdX Gtech pre req courses: OOP Java, Intro to python. - Applied to Gtech OMSCS for spring 24. - Applying to full stack developer positions and doing interviews here and there. The unclarity: I am doing a lot of things. I feel I just need to decide one route, stick to it and focus. Problem is I am unclear which route I should take. Ex. Route 1. Do OMSCS then do internship and get FT SWE position. Route 2. Forget about OMSCS Self study more, build projects then shoot straight for a FT SWE position. Route 3. DO BOTH! (Lol) My goal is: Become a SWE, land a full time position and continue learn and grow in my career.
Is it necessary that I get a degree in computer science/software engineering to become a software engineer? Or can I achieve the same result by getting a different engineering degree like electrical or mechanical engineering? Also, what's the difference in the kinds of jobs you can get with a software engineering degree compared to a computer science degree? Do companies make any distinctions between the two?
Hi Baxate! I’m having trouble on this topic. how do i balance all three? i’m beginning my first fall semester on the 21st, and i’m trying to balance them, but i don’t know how to do so.
Hey Bro, I’m in need of some help with deciding my major. I’m currently enrolled at my university as a Civil Engineering major. I wasn’t aware of such a large wage gap that CE had compared to other professions such as Software, CompSci, Electrical, Chemical, etc. I’m currently 23 years old and have all my core STEM classes complete (Calc, Physics, DifE, etc.) and I’m really considering jumping over to Software engineering. Your videos are super inspiring as I myself am a Lebanese Stem major in the Bay Area. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to see what I’d be getting myself into with software engineering? I’ve never coded or ran any softwares before however I’m not unfamiliar with tech. I’m just curious how things like the homework would look , what the jobs would look like , etc. I’m aware it would be a higher level of difficulty compared to CE. Just curious what courses look like and what exactly I’d be doing in my classes or workspace. I know you have a ton of followers and dms so thank you for taking some time to read this if you ever come across it.
