Hey Baxate , How are you doing hope you're doing well. So basically I have a question and I’ll keep it short and simple, software engineering or CS? I’m leaving for university next month, and it would really help to get your opinion. So basically I’d like to work soon after my bachelor's and am not really concerned about master's but I don’t mind that as well. What is best for the future and to get a good pay job right a way?
Hey man, probably wont see this but I am actually very interested in software engineering and I'm currently going to a cyber focused high school that gets us started pretty early with programming languages and engineering skills, i just wanted to ask if you have any tips or advice for my road to college, my dream is to go to MIT but Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, and a few others are on my list as well, I'm not entirely sure I want to go into this field as Cybersecurity also interests me, but it is an option. Also, how could I get started on some personal projects for GitHub that would possibly bring some attention to colleges or at least acknowledgement as I know you brought this up. Thank you so much!
Hey Baxate. I’m a computer science student right now and i’m having a huge dilemma about my future and wanted to ask you what i could do to succeed. i go to a liberal arts university ranked a little below 100 nationally for computer science and without an actual engineering department on a practically full ride financial award. i sent in a transfer application for virginia tech which is a school ranked top 25 in the nation for engineering and 29 for computer science. i don’t like the atmosphere of my current college and think virginia tech would offer a much more enjoyable environment for me. however, there are some issues. number one it’s more expensive and i would risk potentially going into around 30000 dollars in debt but hopefully less based off of my current plan to pay. because of that i would also have to work a little during college which may restrict my financial freedom and time management. number 2 i’m less certain about the potential of summer research at tech vs my school, since i’ll be coming in as a transfer student, however i’m sure i’d still be capable of finding some opportunity. i want to have a better, more enjoyable college experience and go where i know i can elevate a potential career in computer science, but i also don’t want to make a decision that would be rash financially and put me in a bad position for my future. as someone in the field snd s former college student, i was hoping you could offer some advice for me? thanks so much!:
The Software Engineering Job Market is incredibly competitive these days, and many of the largest companies (FAANG) have algorithms that screen resumes to deem whether they are worthy or not to be viewed by a human.
Because of this, you need to make sure you're Resume is the best it possibly can be for both human eyes, but more importantly, the algorithm. Follow these Dos and Don'ts
DON'T:
1. List clubs or achievements from highschool. Nobody cares if you were the president of the cross country club, or if you were an AP scholar with distinction.
2. List non-technical experiences in service industries like fast-food, waiters, etc.
3. Have mispellings or inconsistent formatting
4. Use multicolored or serif fonts or fancy formatting
DO:
1. Make it one page, no exceptions.
2. Have a section for "technical skills" with the languages and framework you know
3. Quantify results whenever possible. If you built an app, how many users did it help. If you made something more efficient is it 50% more efficient, 100%, 1000%?
4. Be concise, get rid of any fluff.
5. List what languages and frameworks you used for projects/experiences.
I’m just now graduating highschool this may and i’m going to community college because of the cost what can i do in community college in order to set myself up for an internship maybe next summer or the summer after that. Is it impossible to become a software engineer from a community college or would a 4 year would?
